Emergency Lighting

Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting is a “life safety system”, used to assist the evacuation of the occupants in the event of an emergency or power failure, and is a requirement in premises where people are employed and wherever artificial lighting is installed.

Under the Fire Precaution (Workplace) Regulations employers, occupiers and landlords are required to carry out a risk assessment to ensure that their premises and facilities are able to offer a safe escape in the event of an emergency.
The Emergency Lighting British Standard (BS5266) defines the requirements for the correct installation of emergency lighting. Compliance with this standard will ensure that your premises meet the requirements of the Fire Precaution (Workplace) Regulations.

As with BS5839 for alarm systems, regular testing is required to ensure your equipment is working correctly. Daily, monthly, six monthly, annual and tri-annual checks are needed, each having specific requirements. They should be monitored and recorded where necessary in your Emergency Lighting Log Book.

As regulations can change over time, it is your responsibility to ensure your procedures and systems are kept up to date. Failure to do so can result in your installation no longer complying, and thereby breaking the law.

The primary function of emergency lighting is to provide sufficient illumination of people exiting a building in the event of an emergency.

It is vital that emergency lighting comes on if normal light fails. It needs to be sufficiently bright, illuminated for enough time and be positioned that the occupants can leave the building safely.

Emergency light systems should be serviced to comply with BS5839.
